Universities often add interesting fields of study to their catalogs in hopes of attracting new students. Some of these fields are LGBT studies, the study of Hip Hop or Rap; there is even a course on the rapper ‘Jay-Z.’ Well, thanks to a donation of $2.2 million by retired businessman, Louis Appignani the University of Miami has created the first academic chair for the ‘Study of Atheism, Humanism and Secular Ethics.’
Appignani, an atheist himself stated that he wants to “eliminate discrimination against atheists” and hopes “to make atheism legitimate.” Promininent atheist Dr. Richard Dawkins is pleased with the creation of this new chair: “I think it’s a bold step of the University of Miami, and I hope there will be others.”
I think this new academic chair may be a good idea if the study of atheism will be genuine and open to honest criticism. If this chair becomes a cesspool of so-called ‘anti-theism’ which promotes intolerance and hate, then the University of Miami will face many problems. They will see students of this new curriculum attacking religious students and trolling other professors who may be religious or teach religious topics.
Perhaps they can consider using my books in their courses. I may contact them if this chair does develop and is successful at the University of Miami.
