The Catholic Church is in the news again, not for Pope Francis random statements or approach, but for an issue that after a while gets tiring.

As diocesan officials release files on sex abuse in Chicago, the United Nations has been grilling Vatican officials regarding the abuse of children and their response to it.

I will update this post as I learn more, stay turned *

**Update**

Msgr. Charles J. Scicluna who is a former Vatican chief sex crimes prosecutor testified before the Committee on the Rights of the Child.  The committee asked the Vatican officials present about the extent of clergy abuse as well as the measures taken to address the problem.  Moreover, questions regarding any instructions to report or not report instances of alleged abused to the proper authorities were asked.

The Vatican officials had prepared statements and defined for the committee the difference between the Catholic Church and the Holy See.  They added that they did not have the jurisdiction to handle cases which were better suited for the local authorities where offenders originate from. Critics such as SNAP or the Survivor’s Network of those Abused by Priests claimed that the Vatican was repeating the same rhetoric as before, which to them was simply claiming that they do not have authority of their bishops or priests and are not responsible.

However, UN officials and other observers were surprised that the Vatican appeared before them and even admitted that more needs to be done.  At one point, Scicluna even said that local prosecutors must go after anyone who obstructs justice, perhaps hinting at bishops who are accused of shuffling abusive priests around and have not been prosecuted.

The UN committee questioned the Vatican due to what they claim is a failure to report to them as the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child call for.  The irony in all this is that this same UN institution promote abortion which kills children.
